101 Weekends in Europe was a series of travel guide books for weekend activities around Europe. The series included 101 Weekends in Europe, 101 Adventure Weekends in Europe and 101 Romantic Weekends in Europe.
The brief: 101 Weekends In Europe
I was contracted by New Holland Publishers to work on a new travel book series. They had seen some examples of my design work on similar themed books that I had worked on on for Quintet Publishing – 1001 Natural Wonders:You Should See Before You Die and the 1001 Golf Holes: You Should Play Before You Die.
The client wanted a clean, modern look to the series of books.
The Design: 101 Weekends In Europe
The first book in the series was 101 Weekends in Europe – this contained, as the name implies, 101 European travel suggestions. Some of the entries were two pages, some were one page. I designed a layout that took this into account and worked across the extent of the 160-page book. It also allowed room for section openers for each country, an index, and a foreword and introduction.
I designed a coloured sidebar to each entry, which appeared on the outer edge of each page. This included the entry number along with facts and other useful information. These sidebars were colour coded for each country, which made them easy to find within the book.
The overall design of the layout was clean and simple – I made use of white space where necessary, which allowed the content some space to breath. This made a good contrast against the striking images that I chose for each entry. Some of the entries also had extra fact boxes and a pull-out quotes.
After the success of 101 Weekend In Europe the client decided to expand the series. The following titles were 101 Romantic Weeks In Europe and 101 Adventure Weekends In Europe. I worked on both of these using the design that I had established for the first book.
