The Bonjour Effect is a non fiction guide to the culture of France and the French language.

Duckworth wanted a new cover designed for the UK market. They asked me to look at other books about French culture. Many of the covers used an illustrated approach, which is what the client favoured for The Bonjour Effect.
The design: The Bonjour Effect
The book is about communication, so for a starting point it made sense to use speech bubbles. With the colours, it seemed like a ‘no-brainer’ to use the blue, white and red from the French Flag. I researched images of French landmarks, food and people – and found some suitable artwork.
My first design was very similar to the final cover – the man-in-a-stripped-jersey image, with the title in the speech bubble. Other options I showed the client tried different styles of artwork, people, buildings, and finally, a version that used only speech bubbles against a French flag background.
The first option was always the strongest, and the client also liked this version. The original used lighter colours – this was the only real change.
